Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series 2024: Key Moments, Game Recaps & Player Highlights

The Yankees and Dodgers are two of baseball’s fiercest rivals, and this year’s World Series should prove epic between them. Aaron Judge from the Yankees will face off with Shohei Ohtani from Los Angeles; both stars should provide thrilling matchups.

Since their last World Series meeting – also known as “Subway Series” – 43 years have passed.

Game 1

After an emotionally draining Game 1, when they lost to Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam, the Yankees returned home trailing by two games but quickly responded by winning three consecutive contests to force a Game 7 showdown.

Yankees fans will be hoping Aaron Judge continues his postseason success against Blake Treinen when he takes to the plate in Game 9 against Blake Treinen. Judge has had difficulty against Treinen during this postseason – hitting just.203 with 85 strikeouts over 55 games against him so far. Against Treinen this time around though, as Treinen got ahead 0-2, Judge looked at two sweepers but then hit an outright fastball that bounced away to tie things up heading into the ninth.

Game 2

In Game 2, the Yankees must avoid being swept from the World Series like they were in 1976 by finding ways to generate more offense against Los Angeles’ impressive pitching staff.

Carlos Rodon got off to a quick start for the Yankees in Game 2, but Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman struck back-to-back home runs to give Los Angeles an unexpected 4-1 edge in the third inning.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers has started out strong thus far in his rookie campaign, holding the Yankees to just one hit through two innings. Jazz Chisolm and Austin Wells both made outpopouts to end the first inning before striking out Shohei Ohtani to close it out.

Game 3

Since 1941, the Yankees and Dodgers have met 11 times in World Series, sharing some of baseball’s biggest stars and moments such as Don Larsen’s perfect game and “Fernandomania”.

Clarke Schmidt takes to the mound for New York in Game 3, facing an intimidating Dodgers lineup. Unfortunately, his outing got off to a rough start after walking Shohei Ohtani on four pitches during his opening inning of work.

Aaron Judge steps to bat next, receiving a thunderous applause from a Bronx crowd expecting him to deliver in Game 3. Unfortunately for them, however, three straight pitches from Los Angeles strike him out and send the scoreboard reeling by half-inning mark; Los Angeles leads 2-0 after one.

Game 4

FOX Sports’ Deesha Thosar and Rowan Kavner broke down the key moments from Game 4, giving the Yankees their best chance at victory.

Freddie Freeman quickly put the Dodgers ahead with a two-run homer in the first inning. But Alex Verdugo’s fielder’s choice and Anthony Volpe’s go-ahead grand slam in the third helped the Yankees come storming back.

Game 5

After an incredible series, including Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in Game 1 and Los Angeles’ five-run comeback in Game 5, Los Angeles claimed another historic World Series win in 2024. Here is a look back at some key moments from its thrilling final game in Yankee Stadium.

Unfortunate defensive mistakes (a drop in center field, an error by third baseman Kike Hernandez and a wide throw by second baseman Gavin Lux) led to a two-run inning that tied the game 2-2. Blake Treinen managed to escape this danger zone by striking out Austin Wells and getting Alex Verdugo to ground out.

Game 6

Game 6 at Yankee Stadium was another thrilling matchup, pitting the Yankees and Dodgers together again since their epic match-up during the 1981 World Series. In total, these teams met 11 times over their history – nine times for New York while Brooklyn won two.

Reggie Jackson took center stage during the Series, scoring three runs and hitting an important two-run homer off Don Black in the eighth inning. He joined fellow Cooperstown inductees Duke Snider, Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle on one of baseball’s finest lineups ever seen in a baseball game.

Joe Torre made some adjustments in the bottom of the sixth inning, shifting Anthony Volpe to leadoff and inserting Jim Gilliam at second base in place of Graig Nettles. These decisions paid dividends when Juan Soto and Aaron Judge opened up with back-to-back walks off Brusdar Graterol to start off that frame.

Game 7

At stake in this World Series is baseball’s championship title – one coveted by two of baseball’s largest-market teams: the Yankees have won 27 of 41 World Series appearances they’ve made so far while their rival Dodgers are perennial title contenders, having taken six crowns overall over their history.

Of course, some might take offense at two high-payrollers meeting in a Series. But for fans of both clubs, this matchup provides them with an incredible opportunity to witness some of baseball’s iconic players at work.
