Harrdy Sandhu: Journey from Cricketer to Punjabi Music Icon

Harrdy Sandhu is a renowned singer in Punjabi music. He gained recognition with songs like Tequilla Shot, Soch and Joker.

He represented India under 19 and Punjab Ranji teams before getting injured and travelling to Australia for advanced treatment.

As his teammates couldn’t pronounce his real name, his teammates began calling him Hardy instead. Additionally, he is an active Twitter user.

1. Tests

Hardy Sandhu stands out among cricketers who have transitioned into musicians as an exemplary example. A former cricketer himself, Sandhu was part of India Under-19 team and Ranji Trophy matches before an elbow injury forced him out of playing cricket and onto singing full time instead. Following vocal training for 18 months in 2011, his debut album called ‘This Is Hardy Sandhu” did not do particularly well; nevertheless he did not give up and soon released Tequila Shot single track which quickly become popular with audiences worldwide.

He went on to release several popular hits including Bijlee Bichhoo, Dance Like and Jee Karda before making his Bollywood debut with Abhay Chabbra’s film Yaaran Da Katchup and also appearing as an extra in ’83’, the movie about India’s 1983 world cup win.

Sandhu was excited to reveal to Raj Shamani during their interaction that he had once played against MS Dhoni in a Ranji match! Shamani was amazed and asked him about his cricket career; Sandhu replied he represented India U-19 cricket and had shared dressing rooms with cricketers such as Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma; even bowling to Dhoni himself!

2. ODIs

Hardy Sandhu made his ODI debut against Pakistan in the Sahara Cup and took three wickets – including the dangerous Shahid Afridi. Over three first-class matches he took 12 wickets at an average of 26 and economy rate of 3.35 but due to an elbow injury was forced out in 2007.

He turned his focus to singing, undergoing vocal training for 18 months. In 2011 his debut album ‘This Is Harrdy Sandhu’ was released but did not do well; nevertheless he moved to Australia for advanced treatment of his injury, while working as a taxi driver to cover expenses.

He enjoyed an outstanding ODI career, scoring two half centuries from four games. As both an excellent batsman and player with the ball in some matches, he played well batting at number four but struggled in Test matches; eventually being dropped from India’s three match Test squad when Australia visited India for three-match series in 1998.

He didn’t stop there though – his dream hasn’t quite died with it as he has now been cast as Madan Lal from India’s 1983 World Cup winning team in upcoming Bollywood movie 83, set for release on 10 April 2020.

3. T20Is

T20I format demands quick action and strong risk-taking ability from both teams, which explains why both sides play aggressive cricket with plenty of attacks and attack play. Let’s see how each has performed recently in T20I matches.

Hardy Sandhu is a Punjabi singer best known for his song ‘Soch’. Born in a small village in Punjab and known for his mellifluous voice, Hardy made his Bollywood debut with Yaaran Da Katchup film and later his first album This is Hardy Sandhu which wasn’t well received but his songs amassed over 100 Million views on YouTube. Additionally he owns both Juno, his pet dog named after himself, and Snowy his cat companions as pets.

Harrdy Sandhu began his career as a cricketer for India U-19 team alongside Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma; but due to an injury he had to give it up. Following eighteen months of vocal training he released his debut album ‘This Is Hardy Sandhu’ in 2011 featuring singles such as Tequilla Shot which didn’t do as well on charts as well as later hit singles Soch and Joker which did better on charts than its predecessor!

In a recent video, singer Alka Yagnik opened up about his cricketing days, noting he once played against MS Dhoni. Furthermore, during this period he employed himself as a taxi driver to cover expenses.

Harrdy Sandhu (aka Harvinder Singh Sandhu to his fans), also known by his nickname ‘Hardy’ was an Indian fast bowler who competed in various U-19 state-level matches and on the Punjab Ranji Team along with Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara. Due to his hard work and intensity on the field, his friends often called him Hardy as a name of endearment.

Sandhu recently gave an interesting video interview where he discussed his cricketing career. To his surprise, Shamani asked about him playing against MS Dhoni; and after being surprised himself he began talking about bowling at Dhoni during one match! Watch the full video here!
